The NY City Bridge got hot because the drive train that moves it overheated, NOT because "climate change" or ambient temperatures caused the bridge to "swell."
I am not a metallurgist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last week. If this bridge can not operate within its design tolerance because the ambient temps reached the upper 80's, I will be damned if I would ever drive over it!
The official NY DOT report says that "the equipment that moves the bridge overheated." I can understand this!
But claiming the bridge and its decking became so hot that it swelled and caused it to get stuck is just sad. Had the structure and/or decking gotten this hot (to cause the metal to expand beyond its design tolerances), I can assure you that the bridge would still be out of service while it gets a "fitness for service" examination.
This ignorance of the media and their climate crisis reporting reminds me of a friend's son who was confused about how his car would overheat in the wintertime. He knew the radiator had a leak but thought it was not a big issue since it was cold outside. The empty radiator led to overheating, and he was stranded in a blizzard for two days, nearly dying from exposure.
Motors generate much heat; hence, they have the means to cool themselves. These cooling means play a role year-round, regardless of ambient conditions. Granted, when it is hot outside, this cooling system works harder, which is why most of these failures occur during hotter temperatures, but many of you have probably dealt with equipment overheating in cold temperatures as well.
For the record, the Heat Advisory for NYC was because of the humidity levels and the "feel like" temps close to 100F. Metal does NOT care about or respond to the "heat index"! The actual ambient temperature on that day was 88 degrees! And if 88 degrees can cause a bridge deck to swell beyond its tolerances, some Civil Engineers and Beaurecrats need to be hung at sunset by their toes! (https://lnkd.in/eR9xHKcG)
And no, I am not a "climate denier," but I do have a functioning brain and can tell the difference between science and propaganda.
